Military: an extension of states monopoly of violence. Military is an arm of the executive. Can deter or supress rebellion or revolution. Regime falls when military ceases to defend it (especially during a strong rebellion/revolution) Military may offer itself as alternative to civilian rate. Liberal perspective: sustains rule of law impartially, consensually. Conservative: prop up state authority in face of constant threat of disorder. Radical: serves elites, represses people, requires constant check and challenge.
