Document Summary
Whose in whose out: nationalism depends upon a belief in subjective things. Its hard to clarify who is a part of what nation. How can you sort or separate these groups. European states weakened by total war effects: decolonization occurs, european integration. Domination + legitimacy = authority: there must be a way that people have a an idea that the power is justified. Three ways to legitimate domination: traditional, legitimacy is gained through the idea that it has always been that way, monarchy, charismatic, the force of personality. In a moment of crisis, they offer a pathway out: legal rational, the appeal of the reasonable and general rules, backed by a lot of power, the rule of law appeals to us. Democracy also legitimates: popular consent and participation, facilitates peaceful reconciliation, facilitates peaceful reconciliation of competing interests, feedback mechanisms. Just watch out for manipulation, sometimes democracy and trusting it is not enough to regulate power: legitimacy deficit can destroy democracy.
