All of history up to now is the history of class struggles. Conflict between people b/c of economic struggles. No more class struggle when we reach socialism. Conflict between owners of resources and suppliers of labour. History is the growth of human productive power (the productive forces" tend to develop) Create a surplus faster, called development thesis . Our production methods develop within economic structures: slavery, feudalism, capitalism. Economic structures have characteristic relations of production". Society is like a three level building: Level of development of productive forces explains the nature of the economic structure. Economic structure determines the legal and political superstructure. Capitalism will be replaced by communism and common ownership. Need to change property relationships for production to grow. Exploitation is the extraction of surplus labour. Capitalist profit is the surplus value created by workers.
