There can be no nation if there is no distinctions between groups, there cannot be 1 single nation: we are us only when we can say we are not them: comradeship. Membership within the nation which offers a degree of equal form of membership/comradeship. This is equality in a theoretical sense, and it bonds: commitment to political autonomy, usually statehood. When the state territory matches the boundaries of the national community. The state and nation are pure, one, unity, no distinctions within. Most states are multi-national (canada, nigeria, iraq) This is very rare (france, japan, italy) Based on political aspirations one feels part of something.
