Every ideology we looked at, they always served four functions: explanation, evaluation, orientation, and political program. Fundamental equality of all human beings: inequality is an artifact. Every doctrine should be open to critical scrutiny. No religious dogma can reasonably be held with certainty. Known for defending commercial society, otherwise known as capitalism. The poor are just entitled to dignity as anyone else. Classical conservatives: flawed human beings, hierarchy, tradition, and anti- revolution. Contemporary conservatives: small government, free markets, and strong military. Catholic church (pius ix): explicit rejection of liberalism. Basic goods should be produced with the aim of benefitting all. Against capitalism and its unequal distribution of power. Industrial revolution led to dangerous, difficult, undignified factory work. Moral objections to exploitation, poverty, and greed (cid:494)scientific(cid:499) claims about historical change and the end of capitalism.
