Document Summary

Tissue engineering: transdisciplinary approach between biology, material science, biomedical engineering directed toward long-term repair and replacement of failing tissues (cells/matrix) and organs. Need 1) cells, 2) engineering materials, 3) biochemical factors. Autologous: from same body so no rejection: but cells might have genetic disease so is undesirable, and they are limited in number (so use mscs) Allogenic: from diff body of same species (good if recipient has genetic disorder) Multipotent cells in synovium, muscle, adipose, marrow. Can be amplified w/o loss of multipotentiality. Differentiates into chondrocytes (sox9), myoblasts (pax7), and osteocytes (cbfa) 2 ways to repair tissues: indirectly via lowering inflammation and secreting factors that recruit stem cells to repair tissue, proliferate themselves and directly be the repaired tissue. To prove that it has matured, we use tissue-specific proteins to be used as markers. Stain for proteins associated w that cell type. Rna sequence to look at gene expression.
