Historically, there was confusion if synaptic connections were chemical or electrical. He put a heart in a perfusion fluid and stimulated the vagus nerve that is part of the parasympathetic ns that releases ach into cardiac muscle to slow down hr. He removed the fluid from the beaker that had some ach in it and inserted it into another heart and saw that hr slowed down in this heart as well ! Antagonist is also called curare that south american indians put on spears to paralyze animals when hunting. Nicotinic receptors in ans has a different antagonist because it is actually a different receptor that just has the same name: is the difference, is the similarity. Turns out that ans ganglia also use muscarinic receptor. Two types of adrenergic receptors: alpha-adrenergic is more affected by ne further divided into 4 subtypes, beta-adrenergic is more affected by e further divided into3 subtypes. Enteric ns involves both para and sympathetic ns.
