Document Summary

Three areas of cortex which interact with motor cortex in the production of movement: Parietal cortex, premotor cortex, supplementary motor area/cortex. The basal ganglia projects to the supplementary motor area which projects to the motor cortex. The supplementary motor area is on the medial aspect of the hemisphere and goes down the surface (sometimes called the mesial surface). The premorter cortex and the parietal cortex projects to the motor cortex. The motor cortex is on the precentral gyrus in front of the central sulcus. Caudate nucleus and putamen: sometimes collectively referred to as the striatum or neostriatum. Globus pallidus: global pallidus internal, global pallidus external. Historically, there has been some confusion about this and some structures have incorrectly been included in the basal ganglia. Caudate/putamen (neostraitium external global pallidus - subthalamic nucleus . Subthalamic nucleus internal globus pallidus thalamus back to the limbic areas of the cerebral cortex: the limbic cortex is normally associated with emotion, cognitive (prefrontal) cortex loop.
