Physiology 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Preganglionic Nerve Fibers, Microglia, Chemical Synapse
Document Summary
Pns: nerves outside the cns: somatomotor: going to skeletal muscles, autonomic: going to other organs. Cerebral hemispheres: left and right: both sensory and motor information functions contralaterally. Sensory on right side of the body is processed on the left side of the brain and vice versa. Motor control on right side of the body is instigated in the left side of the brain and vice versa. Brainstem: controls some of the most basic functions of the body (ex. Heart rate, respiration rate: midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata (continuous with the spinal cord) Sulci: dips on the brain: very prominent in humans. Increase the surface area of the brain: form landmarks that allow for different lobes of the brain to be distinguished. Frontal lobe: primary motor cortex: processes skeletal muscle input, premotor cortex/motor association area and prefrontal cortex: integrate movement input with other sensory inputs to generate perception/interpretation of the environment.
