Physiology 1021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Uniporter, Common Bile Duct, Motility
Document Summary
4 processes of the digestive system: secretion. *accessory organs (don"t actually touch the food): gall bladder, liver, common bile duct, pancreas, Mastication: the mechanical manipulation of food into a lump of food that is called the bolus, chemical digestion begins in the mouth with the secretion of salivary amylase and lingual lipase. Peristalsis: movement of the bolus down the esophagus, coordinated contractions and relaxations of both the circular and longitudinal muscles, secondary peristalsis: initiated if food is still lodged in the esophagus. Stomach: reservoir for food before it enters the intestines, bolus is liquefied to enhance enzymatic digestion and is mixed thoroughly through coordinated muscular contractions to mechanical breakdown the contents of the stomach. Inactivates salivary amylase: carbohydrate digestion stops, kills microbes, denatures proteins, unwraps folded structure, stimulates secretion of hormones, hormone secretion from/in the small intestine. Jejunum: many villi to increase surface area for optimal absorption, most absorption occurs here (nutrient absorption)
