Document Summary

Whole muscle is made up of bundles of fascicles. Fascicles are made up of bundles of muscle cells/ fibers. Myofilaments are involved in contraction of muscles. Number of muscles cells depends on the size of the whole muscle. Length of muscle cells/ fibers vary from roughly 1mm to 12cms long. Muscle cells contain glycogen and lipids for energy and myoglobin to store oxygen. Muscle cells contain many mitochondria because must made atp. Hollow because this is where calcium is scored. Terminal cisternae is the lateral sac of sarcoplasmic reticulum. Made up of actin- globular protein forming a two stranded chain- contain myosin binding site. Tropomyosin- a rod shaped protein composed of two protein chains wrapped together in a super coil. Lies in groove formed by actin molecules. In the relaxed muscle tropomyosin is situated so that it partially covers the myosin binding sites found on actin.
