Physiology 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Diastole, Superior Vena Cava, Pulmonary Vein
Document Summary
The circulatory system: transports oxygen and nutrients to all cells of the body, transports co2 and waste products form the cells, helps regulate body temp an ph, transports and distributes hormones and other substances within the body. Vein: anything that brings blood to the heart (from body or lungs) Artery: anything that brings blood away from the heart (to the body or lungs) O2 deficient blood from the body enters the heart at the right atrium via superior vena cava. Passes through the right atrioventricular valve (tricuspid) and into the right ventricle. Right ventricle contracts ejects blood through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary artery to the lungs. After picking up o2 and dumping co2 in the lungs, the 02 rich blood returns through the pulmonary vein into the left atrium. Blood enters the left ventricle through the left atrioventricular valve (bicuspid/mitral) Left ventricle contracts ejects blood through the aortic valve into the aorta out to the body.
