Physics 1021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Right-Hand Rule, Angular Velocity, Angular Acceleration
Document Summary
Upto now we studied the translation motion where each point on an object moves with same distance and velocity. Points a and b travel with same distane and velocity. In this chapter we study the rotational motion where an object rotates about its acis of rotation which does not move. 2 points on the dics will be travelling at the same angular direction. The point further away from the center will travel a longer distance in the same amount of time. The axis of rotation is the fixed point that is moving around the circle. Think of it as something coming out perpendicular from the circle. Definition: the angular velocity (w) is defined as the change of an angle with change in time. We use the right hand rule to find the direction of the angular velocity. Right hand rule: curl your fingers around axis of rotation in the direction of the rotation.
