Document Summary
The endocrine system & nervous system are two major communication systems in the body. Signals last longer than ns: can target different sites around the body, regulates body functions by releasing hormones (chemical messengers) into the bloodstream, can release amine, peptide, or steroid hormones. There are many endocrine glands part of the neuroendocrine system. The neuroendocrine system is controlled by the hypothalamus & pituitary gland: hypothalamus responds to environmental stimuli. The neuroendocrine system = hypothalamus + (anterior) pituitary + endocrine glands. Each hypothalamic releasing-hormone controls a specific hormone in the anterior pituitary gland: the interaction of the releasing-hormone with specific receptors on the anterior pituitary gland.
