Document Summary

To determine the implications of variability in drug response. To explain how genetics, determine the ability to taste ptc. To identify three primary components that play a role in the variability of drug response. To identify the three major types of genetic variants leading to altered drug response. Pharmacogenetics is the study of the genetic basis for variation in drug response. The first studies of relevance to pharmacogenetics occurred in the 1930"s. These related not to drugs but the genetic control of a taste response. The term pharmacogenetics was coined in 1959 by friederich vogel. Werner kalow at the university of toronto was one of the pioneers of pharmacogenetics (more later). The human genome project (feb 2001) revolutionized many areas of medicine including pharmacogenetics and the idea of personalized medicine . Pharmacogenetics relates genetics/dna to pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and drug response. In 1932, a ptc tasting experiment was conducted: discovered 25% are usually non-tasters, bitter or not.
