Physicalism: plato described an intellectual battle between gods and giants, gods believe in immaterial things such as forms and souls, giants believed in materialism, will look at how giants view the human brain. Consists of eternal and unchanging atoms but that particular arrangement of atoms is contingent and not eternal: ultimately, however everything is physical. The metaphysical battle continues in the early modern era. The 20th and 21st centuries supervenience & minimal physicalism. Distinction and clarification: nowadays, we talk about physicalism" rather than materialism . However, we must draw a distinction between two varieties: reality physicalism (everything is physical, mind physicalism (the mind is physical) 1 entails 2, but not the other way around: some physicalists re: the mind and its properties don"=t believe that everything is physical (they may, for instance, believe that numbers and/or gods are non-physical).
