Document Summary

Punishment is not the same thing as civil liability-it is a moral judgment that what you have done is legally and morally wrong. It makes sense to punish someone to deter others and that person from doing something that is wrong. Crime and punishment are stretched to the breaking point-it sends a message to the rest of society. It is a principle that is you can punish an innocent person to produce the greatest good, then punish that innocent person-if it benefits the society then it is okay. Use excessive punishment-crime and punishment are loosely connected: retribution-punishment must be a close fit with the crime-guilty person deserves the punishment. Those in authority are free of any wrong doing themselves. Rehabilitation-in jail we can rehabilitate-it is not about punishment, it is about making the person who has been sentenced into a better person.
