Sorting through the sea of information and misinformation: consider your sources source. The process: researchers seek funding for a research project. Not for pro t non-governmental organization: they do the research. Theoretical work: they write it up. In the case of large experiments, one or two people write the report, but everyone involved is included as an author. They mark who endorsed the conclusions: then it goes out for peer review. Editor looks at the paper - papers can be rejected for being unprofessional or not matching the theme of the journal. Referees generally can not catch if data was made up. Acceptance really just means that the paper is free of obvious aws, doesn"t mean the referees endorse the conclusions. Often an article will be subject to criticism and scrutiny by other researchers. It is not uncommon for journal to publish such criticisms along with. reply from the authors.
