Philosophy 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Foundationalism, Dazed

21 views4 pages

Document Summary

Considering concerns raised about the establishment of doubt and the establishment of certainty. Beginning: everyone wants to be able to understand what they know to be true. All our knowledge is like a house all our knowledge rests on the foundation of knowledge we have. We can knock down all our knowledge when we take out the foundations. There are certain ideals given by the senses that must be true. Dreams seem like they are reality you have a moment of thinking the dream was real having that experience is, again, our senses deceiving us. For even when painters try to create sirens and satyrs with the most extraordinary bodies, they cannot give them natures which are new in all respects; they simply jumble up the limbs of different animals. Or if perhaps they manage to think up something so new that nothing remotely similar has ever been seen before - something which is therefore completely fictitious and unreal.
