We saw locke struggle with this question and we saw him ofer some surprising insights, but the question seems unresolved. In asking about the meaning of life, we are asking about the nature of the person or the self: the etymology of person: > latin personare: mask A mask both hides and reveals; it presents a face to the world, but there is something else something more private behind that face. This it the tension we explore today: is our self the mask or the thing behind it . The mask is itself to some extent created but the world, by society, in part at least, a set of expectations of us Often it is a ind of behaviour that is generated by fulilling a social role.
