Often they are built in to the structure of a given inquiry. One of the most useful sorts of work that philosophy can do is bring presuppositions into the light of day, so they can be properly assessed. Very often, major advances in any field of enquiry happen when a (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) presupposed is used. Virginia held and feminist ethics has been doing this ^ She argues that the way ethics has been done for centuries rests on some subtle presuppositions about the nature of ethical theory. Traditional ethical theory sees emotion as something to be restrained by reason. Self control is front and center in conceptions of the good life.
