Document Summary

For this class, set questions of trust and what we can know aside. Accept that humans are causing climate changes that would eventually make people worse off in the future. Accept that we can change our actions to prevent this harm. But, are we obligated to respond to our actions that will not necessarily affect us, but will definitely affect those in future generations. Are there externalities where justice extends between generations. One problem is that are different places on earth that are affected differently. One answer of broome is suggested by okin"s description of the subject matter of justice. Theories of justice are centrally concerned with whether, how, and why persons should eated differently from each other. To the extent that climate change raises questions about future generations people who do not yet exist it raises okin"s question. Climate change engages duties of justice rather than (or perhaps as well as) duties of goodness.
