Three starting points: justice is the first virtue of social institutions, as truth is of systems of thought. ". Justice has a moral priority over things, justice always trumps. Justice must be satisfied before we go onto other things: [s]ociety is a cooperative venture for mutual advantagetypically marked by conflict as well as by an identity of interests. ". We share the idea that we are better off as a society. Major social institutions: collection of widespread practices (ex. schools) When we work together, we have more advantages. Justice as fairness": conveys the idea that the principles of justice are agreed to in an initial situation that is fair. ". Not the content of the idea of justice, it"s the idea that those principles are what we would choose in a negotiation that is fair in itself. You don"t choose to become a part of society, born into it.
