A bit of general background to this term"s topics: metaphysics and epistemology. To start: it doesn"t seem to be a material thing, but material things are usually involved: a score, instruments, musicians, the physical processes that produce the experience of sound etc. One common thought: a piece is somehow essentially connected to a score. Problems: something: unwritten songs, improvised music, musique concrete and sampling. Music is allographic: we can"t make sense of the distinction between the original. Painting, by contrast, is autographic: paintings can be forged: autographic: if we can make sense of forgery. In the case of music, the score provides that theoretically decisive test. So: a piece of music is somehow essentially tied to something like a score. And in any case, even if tied to a score, a piece of music is not reducible to it. It involves events, but isn"t reducible to an event, it seems.
