Consent-rousseau- we are morally equal so a legitimate government can only rise from consent. Hume- says that it must be the case since we are equal that historically a government rose from consent: at some point all the points of a government made sense to people and people consented to it. Hume: ok, even granting that, the original contract may be so old and outdated that it must not be able to retain any authority, this supposes the consent of the fathers to the children. View: if you benefit from a certain law (the right to not be assaulted or robbed) then you consent to the rest of the laws.
