Hematemesis vomiting blood (temesis = vomiting; heme = blood) Occult (hidden; not visible to naked eye) or visible. Melena black blood in stool; stomach or duodenum acid/pepsin can change blood to dark colour. Hematochezia red blood in stool; small or large bowel; lots of blood, therefore no time to change colour. Esophagus runs midline to the back of chest runs between trachea and aorta.
