Nursing 4400A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Bilirubin, Arterial Blood Gas, Infection Control
Document Summary
Sepsis is the number one cause of death in the icu, the 10th leading cause of death worldwide, and the 11th leading cause of death in the usa. Older patients with chronic illnesses are at high risk for developing this condition. A systemic inflammatory response to the presence of infection that can progress to circulatory systemic dysfunction, multiple organ failure, and death, sepsis is a complex disease process that carries a high degree of morbidity and mortality. Older patients are at increased risk for sepsis and it may be more difficult to diagnose clinically in this age group. Babies and immunocompromised patients are also at increased risk. Greater number of invasive procedures being performed in the icu. Rise in the number of older patients with critical illnesses. The cascade is a complex process that involves humoral and cellular responses and complement and cytokine cascades.
