Cardiovascular disease is the second most common cause of death in canada. Cad is the most prevalent type of cardiovascular disease in adults. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease in canada. Atherosclerosis: abnormal accumulation of lipid deposits and brous tissue within arterial walls and lumen. Atherosclerosis begins with in ammation and injury (may be from smoking, hptn, or other factors) to the lining of the arterial wall. Fatty streaks of lipids deposit into the arterial wall. Immune cells leave fats as foam cells. Activated macrophages also release substances that damage wall further, attracting platelets and initiating clotting. Brous cap forms subsequently lled with in ltrate and lipids - called atheroma or plaques. this narrows vessel and obstructs blood ow. Thrombus may cause : cardiac death (due to dysrhythmias) or an acute mi (death of a portion of the heart) Coronary arteries are esp vulnerable to atherosclerosis . Location and degree of narrowing of the arterial lumen.
