Document Summary
Nursing care of the child with a cardiovascular disorder. Typically, cardiovascular disorders in children are divided into 2 major categories: congenital heart disease (chd) and acquired heart disease. Chd is defined as structural anomalies that are present at birth; however, some congenital heart defects may not be diagnosed until later in life. Acquired heart disease includes disorders that occur after birth. These disorders develop from a wide range of causes, or they can occur as a complication or long-term effect of chd. The fetal heart is developed within the first 21 days of gestation in conjunction with development of the heart rate and fetal blood circulation. The four chambers of the heart and arteries are formed during gestational months 2 through 8. Oxygenation of the fetus occurs through the placenta (not the lungs).
