Document Summary
Left lung has 2 lobes, and the right lung has 3 lobes. Lungs should be auscultated from the apex to the base. Respirations are controlled by sensors in the brain: autonomic response to breathing, brain stem controls the respirations, sensors in carotid artery and the aorta. The thoracic cavity contains the heart, lungs, thymus, distal part of the trachea and most of the esophagus. The base refers to the very bottom of the lung fields; the apex is the very top. The alveoli are the primary units in the lungs that absorbs oxygen and excrete carbon dioxide. Surfactant production begins at 32 weeks gestation with function to keep alveoli open. 2. 5 cm higher than the left because the liver displaces the lung tissue upward. The main trigger for breathing is increased carbon dioxide in the blood. Asthma (changes rate, effort, depth harder respirations) Pain (acute pain can decrease or increase respirations depending on pain)
