Pregnancy: more pressure on lungs and diaphragm, difficult tidal volume, intercostal muscles cannot expand as effectively, therefore, respiratory rate increases, colds mucus production resp. rate increases, difficult to get rid of mucus. Medications: may increase or decrease rate, opioids decrease rate, tylenol 3 , allergens. Position: sitting up vs. laying down ( more difficult) Infants and children: muscles have harder time expelling from dead space, fetus. Cultural considerations: not many, asian population.
