What"s the issue: regardless of country, poorer people are less healthy and live shorter lives, than the rich, whitehall study (1977): those lower in job hierarchy (messengers, doorkeepers, etc. ) 3x"s the risk of death from heart disease, stroke, cancer, gi disease, accident, suicide compared with those at the top (administrators) Economic and social conditions that influence health. Determine if we are healthy or become ill. Determines the extent a person(s) have the physical, social and personal resources to identify/achieve personal aspirations, satisfy needs and cope with the environment. About the quality/quantity of resources society makes available to its members. Canada is making little progress in addressing issues of poverty. Child poverty is on the rise affecting 1/6 children. Poverty removes prerequisites for healthy development (shelter, food, warmth, participation in society) Poverty = psychological stress = damaging health effects. Poverty limits people"s choices and works against desirable changes in behavior. Ex/ want to eat healthier foods but cannot afford it.
