Practice guidelines are documents that help nurses understand their responsibilities and legal obligations to enable them to make safe and ethical decisions when practicing. They provide an outline of professional accountabilities and relevant legislation. The regulated health professions act, 1991: contains provisions regarding permitted actions and processes that are applicable to all regulated health professionals in ontario. The nursing act, 1991: contains a scope of practice statement and controlled acts authorized to nursing, as well as provisions and regulations specific to the nursing profession. It includes definitions of the classes of nurse registration, entry-to-practice and little protection regulations and regulations on initiating controlled acts. Together, the nursing act, 1991 and the regulated health professionals act, 1991 determine how the nursing profession is regulated in ontario. Regulates scope of practice for 28 health professions. Refers to the profession as a whole, rather than as individual nurses.
