The ideals of modernism haven"t completely been eradicated in post-modernist thinking. Progress o o o are progress and change always a good thing? we don"t always need to move society forward in some way wars of 20th century fought in the name of change. The desire to shock audiences is gone. Growing interest in works that focus on quotation of existing music. Extreme in collage compositions , we see a profusion of different types of quotations from different styles of music o juxtaposition between different kinds of sound worlds. Quotations treated as foreign objects (distorted) o quotations are literal, but we hear them as if through a screen. Unprecedented range of borrowings o even back to gregorian chant! Multiple quotations often thrown together in an eclectic mix. Sense of distance from borrowed material often created. Makes a statement that aligns with postmodernism.
