Document Summary
Atonal composer struggled to create large scale coherence. No t or d, when removed, all equal weight. 2nd viennese school sought a system to order music. 12 tone systematic way to have one pitch, avoid sensation of its importance. Serialism: method of composition using a series of elements as a point of reference. 12 tone method (dodecaphony): one type of serial music, in which the 12 tones of the chromatic scale make up the series. Series/row- sequence of pitches (usually carefully chosen by composer) Row governs musical work by determining motives and harmonic material. Each row should be heard before repeating. Tones split across octaves, can be placed wherever. Pitch material: (p)= basic form of row (i)= row played upside down (r)= backward, begin with last note and end with first (ri)= inverted from of rows retrograde, upsides down and backwards. Whether to use row horizontally (in melody) or verticaly (in harmony) Whether to use more then one row.
