Quest for new took composers in many directions. Modernism philosophical movement born of socio-political changes self-conscious search for new means of artistic thinking. Taking 19th c ideas of originality to extreme, self-conscious about creating new deliberate strategy thinking about how new an extension of romantic thinking obsession with newness-> striving for novelty-> profusion of approaches. Composers constantly experimenting with stylistic approaches obsession with innovation -> rejection of previous norms. Start fresh, aware of past and respectful increased self-consciousness. Freud: study of sub-conscious, memory, dreams, parental relationship. Music place for freud ideas, emotions, complex, dark, human nature. If science so much to offer maybe interesting things to say looking at art through science. Interest in music theory and explanation of art. Composers job to distance form society, not concerned with audience.
