General definition: the scholarly study of music as: Archival research: where it"s kept, how it"s accessed. Organology: the study of instruments; organs are things that work together, systems. A combination of these techniques is the best way to understand music history. Time and temporality (past, present and future) Culture and history/society of time (now vs then) Tells you what you need to know about it to be educated". Music is an experience that can be recreated . you can"t re-live the treaty of versailles. Music history has the ability to become present think how it is perceived now, if you think beethoven belongs in the now. It all comes together to influence music and motivate composition. It"s also viewed in different context throughout time. Written does not equal simple vs. complex": example: old roman chant and its relationship with gregorian, musicologists must work like detectives, piecing together clues".
