The process was once cumbersome, labour intensive, time consuming, and a very costly affair. Breakthrough of the shipping container in 1956 allowing goods to move seamlessly. In conjunction with port terminals and cellular transportation ships, containerization facilitated shipping between the main markets throughout the world. Container shipping is no longer restricted to a few main trade streams; it is now everywhere and occurs daily. These new technologies combined with the low shipping costs helped billions of people out of poverty and grew the initial purpose reliable shipping. Has always been a central part of a capitalist enterprise.
