Said"s book aims to answer the quesion of why we have a preconceived noion of who lives in the middle east. Orientalism asks how do we come to understand people who look diferent to use by the virtue of the colour of our skin. The way we acquire this knowledge is not innocent highly moivated, relects certain interests. The way the west looks at the middle east is through a lens that distorts the people this lens is orientalism. Constant disparity between his experience of being an arab and the representaions of that in art: representaions of the orient had litle to do with what he knew of his experiences there. Hard for people to address a subject in a free and creaive way. Kind of repeiion of images that kept coming up. Sensual woman to be used by the man. Consistent with itself had litle to do with people that had been there.
