Leadership- the influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context. Trait theory- leadership depends on the personal qualities or traits of the leader. Trait- individual characteristics such as physical attributes, intellectual ability, and personality. Leadership effectiveness is related to self-confidence, need for achievement, sociability, etc. But the relationships between leadership and the outcomes are usually not strong. Difficult to determine whether traits make the leader or opportunity for leadership produces traits. Not clear what people do to influence other successfully. Traits can lead to bias and discrimination when evaluating effectiveness and promotion opportunities. Leader behavior- what a person does rather than who he/she is. Leader reward behavior- leader"s use of compliments, tangible benefits, and deserved special treatment. Leader punishment behavior- leader"s use of reprimands, unfavourable task assignments + active withholding of rewards. Both of the above are effective (with some exceptions for punishment.
