Ob research is the application of the scientific method in searching for the truth about organizational phenomena. Process includes: idea and theory development, problem definition, searching for and collecting info, analyzing data, communicating findings and implications. Basic (aka pure) research- conducted without specific decision in mind, usually does not address the needs of a specific organization, expands knowledge in general not solve a pragmatic problem. Applied research- address specific organizational decision for a specific firm. Determination of need: time constraints, availability of data, nature of decision, benefits vs. costs (is expenditure worth it) Recognize nature of problem, identifying info and how reliable it is, determining what extra info is needed. How researchers reach objective conclusions about the real world. Analysis and interpretation of empirical evidence to confirm or disprove prior conceptions. Steps: assess existing knowledge, formulate propositions, state hypothesis, design test, acquire empirical data, analyze and evaluate data, propose explanation of phenomenon and state new problems raised by research.
