Microbiology and Immunology 2500A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Rectal Tenesmus, Symptom, Stool Test
Document Summary
No qs in how to treat stuff. Ectoparasites: arachnids, insects that not only bite us but can be the vectors of other diseases. Enteric protozoa: parasites that live in our guts. We will do the last 3 on this list. Most of these have a cyst and a trophozoite form; cyst is usually smaller, and more environmentally stable and that"s the infectious form that is robust enough to be transmitted from person to person. Active form is the trophozoite: metabolically active to cause sickness. Diagnosed by stool tests for ova and parasites; could order electron microscopy to look for something that could indicate protozoa. Need 3 negatives to say it"s actually negative. All labs in on are good b/c not competent ones don"t exist anymore. Incubation period: time from infection and time you show symptoms. Often, knowledge of incubation periods will allow you to own proficiency in diagnosis. Most cases of traveler"s diarrhea are bacterial.
