Often called tb for tubercle bacilli: tubercle = lesion people develop in lungs, bacilli = shape of organism. Causes tuberculosis in cows, rarely in humans. Humans can be infected by the consumption of unpasteurized milk from an infected cow leading to extrapulmonary tuberculosis (disease outside lungs) Can cause a tuberculosis-like illness in humans, particularly in aids patients & other immunocompromised individuals. 1/3 of the world"s population (>2 billion people) are infected with tb. 1/10 individuals infected with tb will develop active tb in their lifetime. Tb is contagious and spreads through the air. Tb is a leading killer among people with hiv. Multidrug-resistant tb (mdr-tb) is a form of tb that does not respond to the standard. If not treated, each person with active tb can infect on average 10 to 15 people a year. treatments using first-line drugs. Extensively drug-resistant tb(xdr-tb) now occurs when resistance to second-line drugs develops. >10 million new tb cases in 2015.
