It is only termed virion after it exits the original host cell. Proteins on the particle alter cell biology (by interacting with host receptors) to allow the virion to enter the cell. Viral genome is exposed after entry into host cell. Host ribosome is used to translate and make viral proteins. Virus buds and becomes a virion in order to infect the next cell. During all of this, the host is fighting to prevent these steps from occurring.
