Ling 1028: week 2 dialectology geographical variation. Dialectology is the oldest discipline for variation in sociolinguistics. Most populations start as rural and have been around for a longer time. Rural areas tend to be more isolated. There generally won"t be high degrees of education. Education is what changes people"s manner of speaking. If there isn"t a dependence on education, there won"t be much travel or considerable differences in the way people speak. The type of speech in rural areas remains quite the same. Dialectologists turn to the study of traditional rural dialects. It"s possible that we will see different variants on each side. Lines that divide two different variants could happen in the same place. The border between the us and canada very well acts as an isogloss. On each side of the border, we have features that belong to each speech community.
