Served as reverend/missioinary/circuit rider in alberta, then still part of the northwest. Gordon began writing during his student days at the university of toronto. He published his first novel, black rock, in 1898. while the good was moderately successful in canada, his second novel, the sky pilot, gained him international attention in 1899 and sole more than a million copies. Morality closely tied into sport, athletic, and missions work. Sports were for boys and athletics were for men. Movement begun in 1840s tent revivals and strong" preaching. Idea of christian men reclaiming the feminized" church and elements of religion seen as non-masculine ideal. Important to note as gordon was a muscular christian who wrote often of the benefits of sport for boys and general athletics for men.
