Kinesiology 3336A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Deltoid Ligament, Drawer Test, Talar
Document Summary
Repetitive running and pounding with inversion and plantar flexion on contact. Eversion and external rotation of the ankle without injuring the deltoid ligament (i. e. skiing, hockey) Foot comes into external rotation and forced dorsiflexion and the talus pries apart the tibia and fibula, tearing the ligament. Excessive friction in shoes that are too small or too big. Repetitive trauma to the area over time (chronic) Minimal swelling because ligaments are outside of the capsule. Graded with 4 stages: no pain prior, pain during that recedes on. Rom around surrounding structures, may be swelling if aitfl not torn. Sub-acute: they are going to feel better and want to return to sport don"t let them. Acute: treat pain, apply heat to increase rom, stretch tight structures, strengthen. Sub-acute: freeze them with ice and then work and dorsiflexion. Excessive pronation puts load on gastrocs and soleus to re-supinate.
