Kinesiology 3336A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Lumbar Vertebrae, Cervical Vertebrae, Intervertebral Disc
Document Summary
Primary curves are maintained by the shape of the structures supporting them. Secondary curves are influenced and dependent on the balance of muscles: 1) to create them, 2) to maintain their position & shape influenced by muscles as we go through development. Baby begins to lift its head up. The pull of gravity and muscles on the cervical vertebrae change their shape and the secondary cervical curve begins to develop: hunched over rounded position straightened out, pulling head up so they can see. 12 months old a child begins to walk. Muscles to exert pressure on the lumbar vertebrae and mold them into the secondary lumbar curves. These secondary curves balance the primary curve and allow an upright posture. Failure to dynamically change to an ideal position may bring about pain/ dysfunction. Provide strength and resilience to column (curve) Compressive forces are shared between convex curves and supporting soft tissue. Absorb, distribute, and dissipate loads through axis.
