Neurotransmitter released locally in response to nerve impulses. Hormones delivered to tissue throughout the body by the blood. Close to site of release, at a synapse; binds to receptors in postsynaptic membrane. Muscle (smooth, cardiac, skeletal), cells, gland cells, other neurons.
