Snowshoeing: military didn"t organize it initially, had indigenous origins, considered manly, montreal was the hub. Started taking off in 1840: snowshoe club was founded by elite members of society, the rise of the middle class against drinking. Lots of alcohol involved after the fact: called tramping in the early years, 1844 - started making adjustments to make it easier to race, had different kinds of races. International issue - canada was worried that they would get annexed into the us: both canada and the uk kind of supported the south during the civil war. Snowshoeing became very political: unlike every other sport, the garrison were not leaders, had to be put in their own races because they were so horrible. It was common to give out medals in the military for sport: these were not seen as practical, so they started giving out things with more value, crystal sets, tankers, razors.
